Sony Europe VP Hints at PS3 Price Range

During a radio interview with Générations Europe 1 yesterday, Georges Fornay, the president of Sony Computer France and the vice-president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, alluded to the possible price-point for the PS3's worldwide November launch (in addition to a few other details). Along with explaining that the system is the only next-generation system thanks to its implementation of Blu-ray and full HD visuals (as well as praising the other features of the console), he also explained that the delay of the system was due to the finalizing of digital rights management for the Blu-ray standard.

When asked about the rumors that the console would cost around 500 dollars, Fornay stated, 'Well, listen, if we take into account Blu-ray, HD, we see Blu-ray players at 1000 euros or more, n shores given the history of cheaper U.S. launch prices for Sony consoles.

UPDATE!: Not to long after this news hit the web, SCEE representatives released a statement mentioning that Fornay was not announcing a price point or a date. It also stated that Fornay was making a personal observation, saying that the PS3 might be expensive for a videogame system, but relatively cheap compared to the total number of technological features (i.e. Blu-ray and HD playback) included. Special thanks goes out to our man Arnaud for the direct quote translations .

New Rainbow Six Vegas Details

Like the series' overlying theme, Ubisoft has been rather covert with regards to its latest Tom Clancy title, Rainbow Six Vegas. This morning, however, the company let out a few more details on the upcoming tactical shooter, which is once again headed up by Ubisoft''s Montreal Studio, the creators of the award-winning Rainbow Six 3.

Team Rainbow features a new group of soldiers this time around, including a new team lead, Recon expert Logan Keller. Keller is backed up by heavy weapons and demolition expert Michael Walter, and Jung Park, a long range and electronics connoisseur. Tactics are said to play a major role in Vegas as well, and is reported to be even more so than in previous incarnations of the series. Luckily, players will have help in the decision-making process since their squad-mates now offer advice in certain situations -- like suggesting that they could break through a wall or hack a nearby computer.

Moreover, players are given more advanced planning options too. After using snake cams or other tactical equipment to get a heads-up on the situation, they''re able to tag specific enemies for each of their team members. The result is that users are now able to define exactly who each member is to take out once they enter a room, helping to cut down on the chaos.

Various other elements of the game were reiterated that we''ve touched on before, like the game''s advanced AI system, motion-captured animation set, and the ability to pull off advanced moves and tactics like blind covering fire and repelling down buildings. In other words, Ubisoft Montreal is promising that Vegas 'will be the biggest and best Rainbow Six yet.'

Tom Clancy''s Rainbow Six Vegas is due sometime this fall on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Recruitment Drive for ACONY

According to recent employment opportunity sites and its very own webspace , German development company ACONY is searching for a number of warm bodies to work on its upcoming PS3, Xbox 360, and PC-bound first-person shooter that was announced last year.

Positions required include a Lead Technical Artist, a Texture Artist, a Hi-Poly Modeler, a Senior Game Designer, an AI Programmer, and several other important designations. Familiarity with Unreal Engine 3, the technology on which the shooter is based, is definitely a preferred attribute.

But 'why is this news considering that companies are looking for new people all the time,' you ask? The answer is two-fold:

A very early (and simple) character model. 1.) This is the first time in recent memory that ACONY has listed its previously 'Next-Gen' shooter for specific platforms (PS3, 360).

2.) As part of its recruitment drive, the company has also posted a small bit of sample artwork from the game. You can check it out on our media page below.

IGN will return with more information, hopefully at E3, as it develops.

Whether or not Big Time Revenge and the aforementioned 360 / PS3 title are one in the same is still unclear.

No details about Big Time Revenge are currently known, other than the fact that it's an action / adventure title and that it isn''t entirely platform-exclusive.

More as it develops.

SEGAs Developer Appetite Grows

The last couple of years have seen SEGA make a concerted effort to become a major player in the gaming markets of North America and Europe. This 'Western strategy' has been illustrated by the recent acquisition of The Creative Assembly -- the developer of the Total War franchise -- as well as partnerships with Silicon Knights, Monolith, and Obsidian Entertainment.

Today, SEGA furthered this strategy with the announcement that it had acquired North London-based Sports Interactive -- the developer behind the Football Manager franchise -- and San Francisco-based Secret Level who is best known for Magic: Battlegrounds and America's Army: Rise of a Soldier and who is currently recreating a 'classic SEGA franchise' for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

According to Naoya Tsurumi, CEO of SEGA America and SEGA Europe, these acquisitions represent the company''s committment to '

Quazal Approved for PS3

March 20, 2006 - Quazal Technologies, a middleware developer that specializes in multiplayer solutions (Net-Z, Rendez-Vous, Spark), has announced today it has been officially approved to become a member of Sony CE's Tools and Middleware program for the PlayStation 3.

'The next generation of game consoles brings a lot of power to developers, but many of the problems inherent in online gaming remain,' said Martin Lavoie, CTO of Quazal. 'With true cross-title support, and support for multiple PlayStation platforms, developers can save time and money on their online games, while delivering cutting edge features to their end users.'

'A developer making a game during this transition period may want to target not only next-generation platforms like PlayStation 3, but also current generation platforms such as PlayStation and PSP,' stated Mike Drummelsmith, Developer Relations Manager at Quazal. 'With Quazal''s technologies, including the new Spark platform, online games can target all three of these platforms with minimal effort, lowering risk drastically.'

Because of this approval, Quazal can now develop and market networking middleware tech for the PS3 to any licensed production house -- specifically for the use of its low-risk lobby and matchmaking management systems and other multiplayer elements.

AGEIA Upgrades to v2.4
March 21, 2006 - The folks at AGEIA Technologies announced today that the cross-platform PhysX SDK v2.4 has been made available to developers looking for the latest version of its widely-used API and Runtime engine. The new upgrade adds a number of new features, the specifics of which, we've listed almost-verbatim below:

Cross-Platform Cloth API
The PhysX SDK v2.4 contains a new cloth API - the only commercially available cross-platform cloth solution enabling dynamic tearing in real time. With it, developers can stretch, twist, drape and attach cloth to other rigid-body objects and then have the cloth interact with the environment, creating realistic 'cause and effect' game experiences.

Hardware-Accelerated Joints
Developers can also use AGEIA''s new hardware-accelerated joints to create and accelerate more sophisticated and articulated objects and effects -- all of which act and react with real-life or programmed physics attrib..

First Japanese PS3 Software Dates
March 22, 2006 - Prior to last week's PS Business Briefing, Japanese developers had announced release timeframes for a handful of PS3 games. The system''s delay from Spring to November means there won''t be any hardware units on which to play Spring and Summer games, though, so Japan''s publishing community has pushed the initial batch of titles back to coincide with the new launch.

Famitsu is now reporting the following dates for the PS3:

November: Fatal Inertia (KOEI)
November: Mahjong Taikai (KOEI)
Winter 2006: Vampire''s Rain (AQ Interactive)
2006: RPG (Success)
2006: Hitsuji Mura (Success)
2006: Sonic the Hedgehog (SEGA)
Fall 2007: Dark Sector (D3 Publisher)
2007: Way of the Samurai 3 (Spike)

Everything else has a TBA date. This includes two titles that previously had more specific time frames set for their release: Ni-Oh (KOEI) and Shinten Makai VI (Idea Factory).

GDC 06 Unreal Physics
March 22, 2006 - One of the earliest announcements to come out of the 2006 Game Developers Conference this morning is a bit of a repeat -- that Epic Games' next-gen shooter, Unreal Tournament 2007 will support the AGEIA PhysX processor and SDK. Of course, the PhysX technology is already part of the Unreal Engine 3 to begin with, so this announcement is geared more towards the PC owners who can begin purchasing the PhysX processor starting today.

That didn''t stop AGEIA or Epic from commenting on the PS3 version''s own approach to physics, though...

'Epic Games has been a supporter of AGEIA PhysX technology since its inception, and the availability of the AGEIA PhysX processor will turn up the heat on physics action for the PC,' said Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games. 'With AGEIA PhysX integrated into the Unreal Engine 3, PC gamers and PlayStation gamers alike will experience some amazingly cool physics in Unreal Tournament 2007.'

StarCraft Ghost Ascends to Next-Gen
March 24, 2006 - Few games have had as many ups and downs as Blizzard's ambitious action gaiden to its famed StarCraft series, StarCraft: Ghost. In its unveiling at the Tokyo Game Show in 2002, the console-only game was the biggest news imaginable, a full new outing in a franchise that had not seen its deserved share of action in many years. Following that, however, the game saw numerous delays and depending on what show you caught the game at, StarCraft: Ghost didn''t always impress media in the glowing ways a game of its stature might be expected to earn.

While the title continued to improve, its extended development time had it competing with increasingly impressive new titles every year. The game also suffered setbacks in development, as its original coding team at Nihilistic was forced to leave the project behind when its contract was up due to other engagements. The game seemed as if it might get back on track when new developer Swinging Ape took over the ..

World Premiere SmackDown vs. RAW 2007
March 30, 2006 - It's WrestleMania 22 in Chicago, Illinois this weekend and to help celebrate the occasion, the folks from Yuke''s, THQ, and WWE are going to make a special announcement tomorrow evening. To be revealed at the annual Superstar Challenge prior to this weekend''s festivities (which includes the WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony and WrestleMania itself), the announcement will officially confirm the next iteration of the WWE videogame family, WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 .

In addition to confirmation that the game is coming to stores later this year, the most interesting piece of information actually relates to the systems on which the game is coming out -- which embrace PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions besides the expected PS2 and PSP SKUs.

This move not only marks the first time in the franchise''s history that a SmackDown title will appear on two system generations at once, but also, the first time that the game will be headed t..

Final Fantasy Fools
March 31, 2006 - Yesterday afternoon, the Internet was abuzz with the news that Square Enix plans to unveil Final Fantasy XIII at E3 just over a month from now... at least, that's according to the latest rumor page in the May issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (and its online affiliate, 1Up). Additionally, the magazine goes on to state that a brief teaser video will accompany the announcement and that it will be revealed that the game is also a PlayStation 3 exclusive.

One day later, the official Squeenix spokespeople are all over this one. Pasted below is an official statement delivered to IGN via email about this hot little anecdote:

'While there have been numerous rumors about Final Fantasy XIII,' the email began, 'Square Enix has never released any information about the title. The recent online article stating that the title will be exclusive for PlayStation 3 and shown at E3 is not based on any official information obtained by us. I hope reader..

SNs PS3 Tuner
April 3, 2006 - Development tool production house (and Sony Computer Entertainment subsidiary) SN Systems announced over the weekend that it has launched a brand new Tuner for registered PS3 software developers. Obtainable in a free evaluation version, the new Tuner is a profiling tool that allows developers to locate bottlenecks and conflicts in source code quickly -- helping them to improve overall code performance.

'Tuner has already been a major product, both on the PlayStation 2 and PSP, so it was a natural progression to develop it for PlayStation 3,' commented Andy Beveridge, Co-founder and Director of SN Systems. 'This latest version has been tailored to the PlayStation 3's threaded architecture which will really help developers take advantage of the new hardware. It''s another key tool in SN Systems'' range of products that developers can depend on as they gear up for the release of their game titles.'

Star Cave Announces Next-Gen FPS
April 3, 2006 - Chock this up as an announcement that slipped through the cracks during the busy build-up to last month's Game Developers Conference. Sometime in the weeks before the show, the multi-continent development conglomerate known as Star Cave Studios (which has production houses in Ireland, Australia, and Austin, Texas) confirmed that is has a brand new first-person shooter in the works. Originally intended as a PC title but now planned to be ported to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well, Terra: Formations is the latest FPS to hit the next generation.

Unlike most first-person shooters, however, Formations aims for a unique edge -- by offering real-time strategy and role-playing elements on top of its blasting components. Star Cave even claims that there will be adventuring segments to boot.

Players in Terra: Formations will begin as members of an elite military force whose mission is to 'reshape the environments of inhospitable worlds.'..

Any portion of the payment that is unclaimed will go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities and to establish scholarships for female and under-represented minority students interested in studying interactive entertainment.

The settlement must be approved by the Superior Court of San Mateo County, CA before it becomes effective. In a press release this morning, Electronic Arts stated they did not expect the settlement to have a significant impact on their fiscal four..

Namco Bandai Reveals Ridge Racer 7
April 19, 2006 - Not that this wasn't expected or anything, but Namco Bandai will be continuing the tradition of Ridge Racer on PlayStation consoles. The latest issue of Famitsu has the scoop on Ridge Racer 7 , which is being developed as a banner title for PS3.

Famitsu scored an interview with the main talent behind RR7 -- Masaya Kobayashi is serving as director, with Hideo Teramoto taking on the role of assistant producer and Hiroshi Okubo grabs sound director. These three also worked on the PSP and Xbox 360 RR games.

Kobayashi, while not directly confirming a release at the PS3''s launch in November, stated that the development staff''s goal is to, as quickly as possible, convey to players the concept behind the PS3 hardware. Teramoto personally believes this concept to be 'machine power,' exemplified by the PS3''s ability to deliver movie-quality visuals and sound.

As another concept for the PS3, Teramoto mentioned the system''s ..

Pre-E3 2006 SCEAs Conference TimePlayStation fans should mark their calendars now, because the event they've been waiting for since last May has finally been given a time. Sony Computer Entertainment has officially confirmed when its annual E3 2006 Press Conference will start -- Monday, May 8th at 4PM at the Sony Pictures Studio in Culver City, California.

While very few details have been released about the event so far, the safest bet for us speculative types is that there will be additional details on the launch of the upcoming PlayStation 3, and information on Sony''s online plans. The PS2 could also figure prominently as well (but we doubt it), and additional looks at titles like God of War II could also be shown.

At least one detail has been confirmed, though, and it''s the fact that PSP owners will be treated to downloadable content should they attend. This feature could be a precursor announcements relating to how emulated PS1 titles will work on the handheld, but you''ll just have t..

Ridge Racer PS3 UpdateFollowing up on Ridge Racer 7 's announcement in Famitsu earlier this week, Namco Bandai has opened an official Japanese website for the game. The new space can be accessed by clicking here .

If you don''t read Japanese, allow us to help you out: the site has revealed a few more details to supplement its Wednesday announcement. In addition to competitive races, players will also be able to form teams for co-op, setting up a variety of rules.

Grasshoppers PS3 ThrillerGame designer Suda 51 (aka Suda Goichi) has confirmed the development of a new PS3 game known as 'Kurayami,' a non-linear action / adventure inspired by Prague novelist Franz Kafka (Die Verwandlung, Der Prozess). Best known for his work on titles such as Killer 7, Michigan, and Contact, Suda 51 is a big fan of Kafka's work and the author''s focus on mundane and surreal situations.

An overflow of information is still a long ways away, but Goichi has revealed that Kurayami will, of course, be developed by his co-workers at Grasshopper Manufacture and that the story will follow a character who has been stranded in an obscure village and has to find his way out. Armed only with a torch, users must set off on a journey filled with puzzle-solving and mysterious happenings as they experience scarier and scarier situations surrounded by almost complete darkness.

Square Enix Targets PS3 for MMORPGRemember that next-generation massively multiplayer online RPG trailer Square Enix showed at Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference last year? While Square Enix stated that the trailer was merely a test demo for an MMORPG running on a next-generation game system or operating system, the showing at Microsoft''s press conference suggested that Xbox 360 would be a target platform for the resulting title. It turns out that this may not be the case.

Speaking with Impress Watch on the eve of the Final Fantasy XI: Treasures of Aht Urhgan launch in Japan, FFXI producer Hiromichi Tanaka stated, 'As we work on Final Fantasy XI, we''re currently working on a new MMORPG targeting Windows Vista and PS3.' Square Enix is hoping to make the game a worldwide title, Tanaka added.

Although Tanaka did not make specific mention of Xbox 360, his statements on future MMORPG developments at Square Enix were on the whole pretty vague. He did not state if the new game targeting the PS3 o..

April 13, 2006 - Publisher Ubisoft has officially announced one game - Red Steel - for Nintendo's new generation console, codenamed Revolution. But there may be more titles on the way, according to newly appointed Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat. In a recent interview with Gamasutra, Mallat had nothing but good things to say about Revolution and suggested that more Ubisoft report could be forthcoming.

'I can say definitely, as any other developer, we are looking at this magical platform, and we want to be part of the adventure,' Mallat explained. He made mention of Red Steel, which was recently announced, and added: 'And I''m pretty sure we''ll see other Revolution games from Ubisoft. And some of them, I''m sure, will be made from Montreal.'

Ubisoft Montreal employs more than 1,400 people and has upward of 12 games and fewer than 20 in development for current and next generation consoles, according to Mallat. The former Prince of Persia producer tu..

The news officially confirms last October's early word of the new game.

Titled Brothers In Arms: Hell''s Highway, the new chapter recreates Operation Market-Garden, World War II''s largest airborne operation. Players will fight alongside Matt Baker, Joe Hartsock, and the 101st Airborne Division in a struggle to open 'Hell''s Highway.'

Of course, Ubisoft and Gearbox intend to make Hell''s Highway a properly next-gen project. Along with advanced graphics from the Unreal Engine 3, the companies promise fresh 'cutting-edge gameplay features' and a 'completely redesigned online component' to enhance the series'' squad-based action.

'With Brothers In Arms Hell''s Highway..

Airtights Sealed Next Gen GameAccording to job postings on various employment websites, Airtight Games is looking for a Senior Game Designer for a next-generation title. As soon as the relationship and the project are made public we will add more information to this site.' While there are no details about the unnamed project, it is known that it will the utilize AEGIA''s PhysX code -- especially since the company has worked closely with AEGIA in the past to create physics demos. GDC 06 Sony Announces Widespread Presence
March 21, 2006 - Sony Computer Entertainment made a rather enthusiastic announcement today that it will, in fact, be at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose which begins tomorrow. Though mostly targeted at the development community, companies sometimes choose GDC for major news announcements. Phil Harrison, president of Sony's Worldwide Studios, will be heading up its keynote on Wednesday morning, so new PS3 info may indeed be on the horizon.

The company will have multiple PlayStation 3 kiosks at the conference, showcasing various development tools including Unreal Engine, COLLADA, PlayStation Graphics Library and performance analysis tools. Various PSP demonstrations will focus on authoring wireless and sharing features for the system, as well as a series of peripherals like the PSP headset and car adapter.

Sony also plans to have a number of playable titles on display, including Tourist Trophy, Loco Roco, Namco''s Me and My Katamari and SOE'..

GDC 06 SCEEs New Car
March 22, 2006 - In SCE's platform keynote on PS3 today entitled 'PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box', a brand new real-time PS3 demo was shown of a car getting shot and blown up.

Not many details are available on this demo, but it is part of a new (unannounced) title. In the demo, a car with a gorgeous, blisteringly-hot paint job was subjected to a riddling of bullet hits. When the bullets hit the engine, the car was completely deformed, with the wheels falling off of the dead heap to end the demonstration.

GDC 06 Blu-Ray Loading
March 22, 2006 - In its keynote address at GDC 2006 this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment talked more about the capabilities of the Blu-ray platform and what it means to PS3.

The functionality of the Blu-ray disc concentrated on size, as it has in the past, but this time a real-time demonstration of what size might mean to a console was shown. SCE's Phil Harrison said that Sony''s estimates for next-gen gaming and design points to a demand of at least a 100-to-1 ratio of available data to system memory for modern software; Blu-ray can provide a whopping 200-to-1 ratio with its tremendous multi-layer disc space. With this much legroom, one global SKU (or version of the game) could be developed for all regions across the globe.

This could, in theory, be updated on the fly. To show off the PS3 and Blu-ray in a more practical manner, a demo from The Getaway team returned from E3, only this time it was proven to be in real-ti..

GDC 06 Sonys Ducks Return
March 22, 2006 - One of the many demos shown during Sony's keynote address held today by Phil Harrison revolved around rubber ducks -- the company''s favorite demo characters. Rather than filling a bathtub this time though, these half-dozen or so ducks were especially heavy and somehow managed to wind up at the bottom of the ocean.

The ducks weren''t the focus of the demo though, but rather the schools of fish that swam around above them. Hundreds, if not thousands, of fish swam about in various schools, with each of their animations and swimming patterns created procedurally.

Above the fish and through the surface of the water, the sun''s glare could be seen scattering over the water. Phil Harrison said that he''d been told that the sun was 16,000 times brighter than anything else in the sky, and that this demo realistically took this into consideration and simulated the light''s dispersion and distortion through the ocean. Neat stuff.

Beowulf Announced
March 28, 2006 - 4HEAD Studios have just announced Beowulf, a new title set to appear on next-generation consoles. While the development team had mentioned plans to release Beowulf for PCs, this is the first mention that it will ship for next-generation consoles. Beowulf has yet to find a publisher, so details as to what specific platforms will receive it remains unknown.

In addition to 4HEAD Studios, the art and animation studio 3D-IO has also signed on to work on the project. Igor Posavec, Art Director at 3D -IO, sounds optimistic about the art studios role in creating Beowulf.

'3D-IO is renowned for its unique artistic style, and is specialized on delivering stunning 3D graphics of the highest quality. This partnership is an ideal match of skills and will allow us to significantly boost the overall production output, and thus the scale and appeal of the game.'

Gustaf Stechmann, Producer and Creative Director of Beowulf, is equally opti..

PS3 Delayed to November Though Sony has been steadfast in sticking with its 'Spring 2006' launch timeframe for the PlayStation 3, the morning edition of Japanese business paper Nihon Keizai Shimbun is reporting that the system will see its release pushed back until early November of this year.

Citing problems with finalizing the copy protection scheme for Blu-ray, which the PlayStation 3 will employ as its removable media, Nihon Keizai Shimbun believes that the system will hit store shelves some six months later than expected. According to the paper, the Blu-ray copy protection problem is the only thing holding back the release of the console as its other core parts, including the cutting edge Cell processor, are all on schedule.

IGN contacted Sony US representatives who unsurprisingly told us, 'Sony Computer Entertainment does not comment on speculation stories.'

PS Biz Brief 06 Kutaragis PS3 Promise Sony Computer Entertainment officially kicked off its 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing just moments ago. SCE President Ken Kutaragi took to the stage almost immediately following the press conference's start and apologized for all the PlayStation 3 speculation that has littered the industry over the past several months.

'It is my aim,' Kutaragi said, 'To clear things up about the PlayStation 3 today. The PS2, the PS3, the network, and Future Cell Network, this will all be addressed.'

Following his opening statements, Kutaragi also announced that more than 100 million PS2 systems have shipped worldwide in addition to more than 1 billion copies of 6700 different titles.

A quick look at the PS Business Brief. Check back throughout the evening for more updates as they happen.

PS Biz Brief 06 PS3 Worldwide Release in November Ken Kutaragi, PlayStation Master and keeper of big news, has announced at the PS meeting today that the PlayStation 3 will be launching in early November worldwide for the North American, Asian, and European territories.

'A completely simultaneous launch is physically impossible,' Kutaragi said, 'but we believe we'll be able ship to users throughout the world around this time.'

Sony''s production line is set to pump out one million units per month to meet demand, with a total of six million units to be produced in Fiscal Year 2006 (through March 2007) alone. Production numbers are higher for PS1 and PS2 in their initial years.

PS Biz Brief 06 Blu-ray Disc Production Info At its PlayStation Business Briefing 2006 held in Japan, Sony announced today its production plans for BD-ROM discs (Blu-ray). As it turns out, all PlayStation 3 games will ship on Blu-ray to help prevent piracy. In other words, no 'cheap' DVD releases.. Of course, the system will still play PS2 and movies on DVD.

The company expects initial BD-ROM production to reach 2.5 million in Japan and Europe and 5 million in the US.

PS Biz Brief 06 PS3 HDD Required As part of the PlayStation Business Briefing held today in Tokyo, Ken Kutaragi confirmed that the PlayStation 3 will require a hard drive peripheral for games. Developers are being told to create software with the assumption that a hard disk will be present.

'The hardware was developed with the hard disk in mind,' Kutaragi said.

Earlier, we mistakenly reported that Sony had confirmed plans to include the hard disk with the PS3 right out of the box. Kutaragi actually stopped short of confirming this, leaving it as an area of speculation for now. He did state that Sony hopes to avoid a situation where some systems have the drive and others don't (Kutaragi didn''t mention Xbox 360, but he was probably thinking it).

Despite this slide shown today at the PS Business Briefing, Sony left a few questions open about its hard disk plans SCE is telling developers that they can expect a 60GB hard disk which is upgradeable..

PS Biz Brief 06 Final PS3 Dev Kits in June In one of several compelling announcements made in Tokyo at the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing today, SCE president Ken Kutaragi confirmed that the final PS3 development kits will be shipping out to production houses in June. Additionally, there are 15 different companies making tools and middleware for the SDK.

At DICE 2006 held in Las Vegas earlier this year, SCE announced that thousands of development kits had already shipped to second and third parties, but the kits themselves weren't final.

PS Biz Brief 06 PS3 Online Details Released Sony Computer Entertainment finally unveiled today info on its PlayStation 3 online plans at its PlayStation Business Briefing currently happening in Japan.

Beginning at the system's launch scheduled for sometime this November, the system will feature community tools including lobby matching and voice chat, as well as commerce features that include bootable software via the hard drive and more.

The service was created with the help of Sony Online Entertainment. Best of all, the 'basic' service will be free of charge.

PS Biz Brief 06 PS3 is Live At the PlayStation Business Briefing 2006, Ken Kutaragi has just added another infamous quote to his belt, this time stating that PS3 games are 'live' and that the PS3 concept is '4D'.

He claims that games have gone from 8-bit to 16-bit planes, to the 'space' that you saw on the PS1/PS2, and now PS3 will be 'live'.

We don't know what this means, but please, discuss it amongst yourselves.

PS Biz Brief 06 No Games on Display The PlayStation Business Briefing 2006 has just wrapped up over in Tokyo, and surprisingly, there were no new software announcements made. So now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

PS Biz Brief 06 PS3 Online Service Update Sony Computer Entertainment's answer to Xbox Live is at last coming to light. While previous comments from executives were unclear on the matter, company president Ken Kutaragi today assured members of the press, third party companies, and investors, that the PS3 would be seeing a service similar to Microsoft''s.

The service, which is currently going under the working name of 'PlayStation Network Platform,' will see its service kick off at the PS3 launch in November. Basic service will be free of charge initially, although it should be noted that Kutaragi did not comment on what constitutes 'basic service.' Business will take place on the open internet, suggesting that the service will be more open than Xbox Live.

The service will offer full support for online title development, providing necessary functions and services for commerce and community. Sony made note of some of the major features that all Online titles will be able to access:

PS Biz Brief 06 PS3 Development Update With the PS3's release date now set for some time in November, third party developers who''d been working away for a spring launch (if there were any who actually believed the date), now have some extra breathing room to prepare their games. At the PlayStation Business Briefing in Tokyo today, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi provided further insight into how the company is hoping to help developers get the most out of the complex new system.

Of course, we''re not sure how seriously SCE was actually taking its original spring release date promise, as it turns out that development tools for the PS3 won''t even approach a final state until the middle of May. By the end of March, Sony will update current loaner development kits with the 'DEH-R103X' rev, which offers final versions of the Cell and RSX along with prototypes of the controller and the Blu-ray drive. In mid-May, loaner kits will be updated to the DEH-R104X kit, which finalizes the controller..

PS3 to Ship with HDD After All Though SCE President Ken Kutaragi confirmed earlier this week that all PS3 titles are being developed to utilize the hard drive as a standard, it was never made clear if the system was going to ship with the HDD or not. According to British videogame website Yahoo Games UK , however, European Sony representatives have confirmed that it will.

IGN attempted to contact U.S. Sony Computer Entertainment reps, but did not receive a word back by press time.

GDC 06 Fresh PS3 Details In his platform keynote address at GDC 2006 this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison gave a number of details on the PlayStation 3.

Perhaps most impressive were two new demos. Using a PS2 controller, Sony presented a new duck demo, as well as an underwater scene featuring thousands of swimming fish and amazing water and sun effects.

Harrison also revealed that the PlayStation 3 will be fully backwards-compatible from the start. Its worldwide launch in November -- which will include Australia -- will be supported by one million units available per month.

Sony plans to have final PS3 development kits available in June. The company has confirmed initial middleware support, including Epic's Unreal Engine and AGEIA and Havok 3.3 physics -- all optimized for the system.

GDC 06 New PS3 Online Details In his platform keynote address at GDC 2006 this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison offered new details -- and confirmed older information -- on the PlayStation 3's network platform.

The service will also support third-party servers.

GDC 06 Resistance Shown In its platform keynote address at GDC 2006 this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment displayed a new demo for Resistance, the game previously known as I-8.

In development at Insomniac Games (the makers of early Spyros and all the Ratchet and Clanks), the new real-time demo showed the game in much more complete form than the simple FPS that was shown at E3 in 2005. In the demonstration (which may still an alternate version of historic warfare, although the latest trailer showed more of a post-apocalyptic, alien-invader look), the gameplay was shown with new weapons very much like Ratchet and Clank, only now with a more realistic slant. How real did the game demo get? There were body parts tossed about that rolled around on the ground... with realistic physics, of course. The demo also showed off effects such as smoke trails on grenades, tactical troop movements, and enemies that came from the ceilings as the lead character ran down a devastated corridor.

GDC 06 Sony Goes Digital In his platform keynote address at GDC 2006 this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison talked about future plans for SCE to mine the emerging digital distribution field of gaming. Steam and Xbox Live may have beat them to it, but Sony has had interests in online game distribution for a long time now, and the company is eager to get into it big-time with PS3.

For PS3 (and to a lesser degree, as was mentioned at the PlayStation conference earlier this month, the PlayStation Portable), SCE has plans for a more complex revenue system than just brick-and-mortar game sales. The plans include digital distribution and episodic content of existing games. SCE also is interested in in-game advertising and long-time subscription gameplans, where appropriate.

GDC 06 Singstar Hums on PS3 As a finishing touch to his keynote at GDC this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison offered a few bars from another PlayStation 3 title: SingStar.

The game is straight out of SCE Europe's SingStar franchise (obviously), which is already five-games deep on PS2.

Will Singstar be the next generation''s answer to Karaoke Revolution? We''ll have to wait to see more.

GDC 06 Region-free PS3 In a QA session following the platform keynote address at GDC 2006 this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison confirmed what was heavily demanded for import gamers all over the world and yet previously thought unthinkable for a major corporation: the PS3 will be region-free for gaming.

The move was not unexpected, as SCE had previously mentioned considering the possibility of opening up the region structure for PS3 games recently (the newly-released PSP system has but does not use a region code system for games, but that's more a standard for portable games than a new development for region-free gaming.) The system is, amongst other things, hoped to help combat piracy - many import fans 'chip' their consoles with region-free mod chips to play import games, and while that desire has some legitimacy, it also opens the doors for pirates to release illegal copies of games. GDC 06 Game Developers Choice Awards The International Game Developers Association held its annual Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony Wednesday night in San Jose, California, where a number of major games took home prizes. The show's big winner was not Sony''s God of War, which took top honors at the DICE 2006 summit, but Shadow of the Colossus, whose stylistic design wowed the IGDA''s committee of developer voters.

'Game creators have earned the recognition we give other celebrities such as movie stars and pop singers, and they''ve provided an undeniable contribution to world culture in light of the hours of entertainment they deliver,' said Jamil Moledina, director, Game Developers Conference. GDC 06 Pandemics Six-Game Plan In the same meeting room with the joint brains behind the well-known Canadian RPG maker, BioWare, Pandemic Director of Production Greg Borrud spoke to IGN about making open design games like Mercenaries and the inevitable sequel to 2005's number one selling unique IP.

'Mercenaries sold well enough to warrant a second try,' said Borrud. 'It was the number one selling new intellectual property in 2005. It performed best on PS2, but still sold well on Xbox.' When asked whether the company was working in partnership with publisher LucasArts on the potential project, Borrud declined a direct answer. 'We haven''t officially announced such a game,' he said, smiling.

IGN has learned from sources outside the company that the sequel to Mercenaries is in the works, though a firm contract with a publisher hasn''t been worked out yet. It''s possible Mercenaries 2 will appear at E3 without a publisher (and if that''s the case, it will certainly leave with one). Borrud..

GDC 06 PS3 Gets Unreal We were excited to get our hands on the demo of the Unreal Engine 3 along with some of the other PS3 demos on the show floor (for more on those impressions, click here ), but we were extremely excited when we were given the chance to see the Engine in more detail, and get some specific questions answered about the PS3 and the Unreal Engine with Kismet scripting.

Many of the impressions posted yesterday sum up the demonstration of the demo that Epic Games showed off behind closed doors, but it was particularly interesting to find out that the level shown both on the show floor and behind the doors was created in three days. In fact, according to Tim Sweeney of Epic, providing a backbone for a level with basic structures and layouts are now extremely straightforward with the engine. This makes it possible for a quick development cycle and rapid delivery of content, where developers can spend much more time polishing gameplay and tweaking elements to get the bes..

StarCraft Ghost Ascending to Next-Gen
March 24, 2006 - Few games have had as many ups and downs as Blizzard's ambitious action gaiden to its famed StarCraft series, StarCraft: Ghost. In its unveiling at the Tokyo Game Show in 2002, the console-only game was the biggest news imaginable, a full new outing in a franchise that had not seen its deserved share of action in many years. Following that unveiling, however, the game saw numerous delays, and depending on what show you caught the game at, StarCraft: Ghost did not always impress media watchers in the glowing ways that a game of its stature might be expected to earn. While the title continued to improve, its extended development time had it competing with increasingly impressive new titles every year. The game also suffered setbacks in development, as its original coding team at Nihilistic was forced to leave the project behind when its contract was up due to other engagements. The game seemed as if it might get back on track when new developer Swinging Ape too..

(Funnily enough, it''s most often easier to run illegal gam..

GDC 06: Phil Harrison QA Info After this morning's Sony keynote address, Phil Harrison held a brief Q..
GDC 06: New Duck Demo Details One of the many demos shown during today's Sony keynote by Phil Harrison revolved around rubber ducks, the company''s favorite demo characters.

Above the fish and through the surface of the water, the sun''s glare could be made out scattering over the water. Phil Harrison said that he''d been told the sun was 16,000 times brighter than anything else in the sky, and that this demo realistically took this into consideration and simulated the light''s dispersion and distortion through the ocean. Neat stuff.

GDC 06: PS3 Gets Unreal We were excited to get our hands on the demo of the Unreal Engine 3 along with some of the other PS3 demos on the show floor (for more on those impressions, click here ), but we were extremely excited when we were given the chance to see the Engine in more detail, and get some specific questions answered about the PS3 and the Unreal Engine with Kismet scripting.

Miyamoto Talks PlayStation 3 The 'Games Blog' supplement attached to the online division of the UK's widely-read Guardian Newspaper held an interview yesterday with Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto. Among the various topics discussed, was the PlayStation 3.

'Our competitors are talking about beefed-up graphics and better technology,' commented Miyamoto when questioned about the technical capabilities of the PS3. 'We could fight in that area but we think it is not necessary and we would rather focus on what Nintendo can do uniquely. We want to get a balance between powerful CPU''s or beautiful graphics and making the technology comfortable and appealing. We created the DS and Revolution with this philosophy and concept in mind.'

Miyamoto, the DS, and Mario. Miyamoto also reacted to the recent announcement by Sony regarding its planned worldwide launch in November...

'Any announcement about PS3 will affect Nintendo, he said. 'But we don''t see it..

GDC 06: GDC Gets Epic
March 3, 2006 - Now that the company is one of the major providers of next-generation game technology, it's not surprising that Epic Games will make noise at this year''s Game Developers Conference. As it has done in previous years, the production studio will use GDC as a showcase for its Unreal Engine 3 technology, wowing fellow developers and press with how much power can be pressed pixels.

This year, Epic will use a private theater to show its latest technology, including Unreal Engine 3 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the FaceFX facial animation system, advances in game physics, and other tools.

In addition to the Unreal razzle-dazzle, Epic will host its own space in the Career Pavilion to woo game developers, while elsewhere Epic team members will speak on topics ranging from game engine design to issues of cheating in multiplayer games.

This year''s Game Developers Conference takes place March 20-24 in San Jose, California.

Microsoft CEO Comments on PS3 Launch Steve Ballmer, Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, had several bold things to say about his competitors at Sony Computer Entertainment in a recent interview conducted by Fortune Magazine . Reacting to Sony's news that it would launch the PlayStation 3 in Europe, North America, and Japan simultaneously this November, Ballmer predicted that Microsoft''s own system, the Xbox 360, would stand tall as the number one gaming console.

'In every other generation, the first guy to 10 million consoles was the number one seller in the generation,' noted Ballmer. 'Did we just get an even better opportunity to be the first guy to 10 million? Yeah, of course we did.'

Despite the confidence displayed by Ballmer, Microsoft still hasn''t revised its projected 360 market share, nor has it sped up console production to get more systems out before November. 'We''ve been saying ''Make them faster'' before [March 14],' said Ballmer, no doubt referring to the lower-than-exp..

According to British videogame website Yahoo Games UK , however, European Sony representatives have confirmed that it will.

IGN attempted to contact U.S. Sony Computer Entertainment reps, but did not receive a word back by press time.

FEAR Sequels Confirmed Monolith's F.E.A.R., published by VU Games in October, quickly became one of last year''s most acclaimed PC shooters, underlining the developer''s skills (Monolith''s portfolio includes the beloved No One Lives Forever franchise) and offering genuine FPS thrills in the aftermath of Half-Life 2.

While rumors of a console version of F.E.A.R. are already surfacing, today Monolith and parent company Warner Bros. Interactive confirmed that the franchise will live on in a number of sequels.

Monolith is developing the F.E.A.R. follow-ups for PC and next-generation consoles. The games are being created independently of VU Games, meaning the sequels will be true continuations of the franchise, but because VU Games owns the 'F.E.A.R.' name, the next iterations will bear a different title.

A sequel to this bloody mess is coming to a PS3 near you. Rather than simply port a single game to PC and consoles, Monolith hopes to create sep..

Vin Diesel Stars in New Game FilmGamers who dug Vin Diesel in The Chronicles of Riddick will be excited to learn that the action star is going to be right at the center of a new game-meets-film project. Midway today announced The Wheelman , a fresh property developed by Midway, Diesel's own Tigon Studios, and three Viacom outfits -- MTV Films, Paramount Pictures, and MTV Games.

The Wheelman -- which tells the story of an 'expert wheelman' (played by Vin Diesel, of course) who leaves retirement to save a woman from his past -- is being developed as both an action film and a next-generation console title. MTV Films and Tigon Films will handle production of the movie, while Midway Studios Newcastle (formerly Pitbull Syndicate and creators of L.A. Rush) is working with Tigon Studios and MTV Games on the tie-in game.

Both the game and the film will focus on Diesel as a take-no-prisoners action star.

Rich Wilkes, a veteran of previous Diesel project XXX, is set to handle the film''..

Sony Announces Blu-ray Launch Date
February 28, 2006 - Sony announced that it will launch Blu-ray disks in North America on May 23rd, less than three months from now. On this day, Sony will make eight titles available from its two major movie studies, Sony Pictures and MGM.

The eight titles are: XXX, Resident Evil Apocalypse, 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, A Knight's Tale, The Last Waltz, Hitch, and House of Flying Daggers.

A second set of titles will follow a few weeks later on June 13th, and will include Robocop, SWAT, Stealth, Species, Legends of the Fall, Terminator, and Kung Fu Hustle.

On the May 23rd launch date, the only available Blu-ray player expected to be available for purchase will be the Samsung BD-P1000. Sony and Pioneer expect to have players available soon afterwards.

Sony has not, and apparently will not, set an MSRP price for their Blu-ray releases. Wholesale sales to retail have been set at $23.95 for new releases and $17.95 for the..

Stranglehold Goes OnlineMidway's upcoming action title and spiritual sequel to John Woo''s Hard Boiled known as Stranglehold will not only feature intense single-player action, but also a few interesting multiplayer modes. According to Midway, the game will at the very least have a Deathmatch option, though other online features are still being worked on. How exactly to handle Stranglehold''s term for slow-motion called Tequila Time (TT) in a multiplayer setting is still an issue that hasn''t been resolved -- but it may be there''s a power-up that confers TT to whoever picks it up, or perhaps every player will have TT and two players using it simultaneously will cancel out its advantages.

Also making an appearance in the multiplayer (as well as the solo game) will be vehicles, one of which is a boat. Again, how this extra will translate into multiplayer is still unknown, but the prospect of having slow-motion boat battles online is definitely an interesting one.

Day 1 Embraces the Future
March 2, 2006 - As evidenced by employment listings on various job sites and its own official web space , Day 1 Studios has begun a hiring push for its next videogame project -- but it isn't for another MechAssault title (the Xbox franchise the team is known for). Instead, the headhunting campaign is aimed at bolstering its next-generation development staff for an unannounced game on both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

All that is known about the mystery project so far is that it will be 'action-oriented' and is in need of an Art Manager, a Network Software Engineer, and a Technical Animator. No other details have been confirmed.

We''ll keep you posted with more as it breaks.

Pre-E3 2006: Elveon Playable at Show
March 2, 2006 - This year at E3, 10tacle Studios will have a playable version of its upcoming epic, Elveon on display. The game promises a massive world, a different kind of combat system and a rich fantasy world. Gameplay will be completely open-ended.

'After our E3 debut last year we are looking forward to present with Elveon and an impressive portfolio once more,' said Michele Pes, CEO of 10tacle Studios. 'With [this] extraordinary title we underline our high quality standard in development and also give a strategic outlook of the company. At the same time we will take advantage of the E3 to acquire promising new projects and studios.'

Using the Unreal 3 engine, Elveon is scheduled to release in the summer of 2007 for PC and next-generation consoles. The word Elveon itself means 'The book of Elves,' and ties in with lore that details the creation and emergence of elfish culture.

10tacle also announced that it plans to show a new ..

Midway Brings TNA iMPACT to PS3
March 2, 2006 - Midway announced at its Pulse event in Los Angeles that it had grabbed a hold of the exclusive TNA (Total Nonstop Action) wrestling license and will be publishing games for all next-generation systems in the future. Previously, a license acquisition had been announced, but no next-generation plans had been solidified until now.

Unfortunately, concrete release dates and details went unannounced, and gameplay footage was absent as well. Instead, Midway displayed a montage of spliced-together television footage from the TNA show that airs on Spike TV.

What is TNA wrestling? From the video shown at Midway's event, it''s as a more extreme, action-oriented alternative to the WWE. The ring has six sides instead of four, there are several specialty match types including a six-sided cage and a race for a belt suspended above the ring by four ropes, and from what was shown, we can assume these sorts of modes will be available in the actual gam..

March 3, 2006 - 2K Games announced today that it is publishing The Darkness , a first-person shooter based on the best selling comic book from Top Cow Productions. The title was initially scheduled to be published by Majesco, but the company solid its publishing rights last December to help with struggling financial obligations. Developed by Starbreeze Studios for next-generation systems, The Darkness centers around a mafia hitman named Jackie Estacado, who receives supernatural powers after he's possessed by an ancient demon.

'The Darkness videogame is a dynamic first-person shooter that allows players to call upon the forces of the evil underworld as they fight in gritty, urban environments,' said Christoph Hartmann, Managing Director of 2K Games. 'Armed with an arsenal of guns, gamers will battle an array of demonic creatures and supernatural powers. The dark and dynamic comic book storyline will translate perfectly into first-person action that fans will ..
